The Centre for Human Rights (the Centre) is both an academic department and a non-governmental organisation at the Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria. The Centre was established in 1986, as part of domestic efforts against the apartheid system of the time. It is recognised for its role in strengthening human rights education in Africa. The Centre’s mission is to work towards the realisation of human rights, particularly in South Africa and Africa as whole. This is done through research, education, training, lobbying and community development. As such, the Centre strives to achieve Ubuntu (humanity) and excellence in its endeavours.
